Victory for Ward's Corner Market

On 22nd June 2010 the Court of Appeal, in an historic judgment, ruled unlawful the planning permission which Haringey Council had given to developers to destroy the locally listed Ward's Corner building and the neighbouring Latin American market. In its judgment, the Court held that the council had failed to have regard to the damage which this demolition might do to equal opportunities and to good race relations.

David, who has campaigned with the community to save the market, said,

"This judgement stands as testimony to the determination and courage of the Ward's Corner Community Coalition (WCCC) to protect this vital community asset which makes Seven Sisters a uniquely diverse place.

Ward's Corner is a place where people from all over the world live together in harmony and run businesses that serve the whole community. If the Council's decision had stood, all of that would have been swept aside to make way for blocks of flats and chain stores.

The Council's decision was struck down because they did not do what the law required, which was to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and the need to promote good relations between persons of different racial groups.

Thanks to this case, it is now difficult to see how any future decision to allow the wholesale destruction of this place could ever survive a court challenge.

My promise to the Ward's Corner Community Coalition is that I will support them in any future battles which they may have just as I have done in the past."
