Victory for Ward's Corner Market

On 22nd June 2010 the Court of Appeal, in an historic judgment, ruled unlawful the planning permission which Haringey Council had given to developers to destroy the locally listed Ward's Corner building and the neighbouring Latin American market. In its judgment, the Court held that the council had failed to have regard to the damage which this demolition might do to equal opportunities and to good race relations.

David, who has campaigned with the community to save the market, said,

"This judgement stands as testimony to the determination and courage of the Ward's Corner Community Coalition (WCCC) to protect this vital community asset which makes Seven Sisters a uniquely diverse place.

Ward's Corner is a place where people from all over the world live together in harmony and run businesses that serve the whole community. If the Council's decision had stood, all of that would have been swept aside to make way for blocks of flats and chain stores.

The Council's decision was struck down because they did not do what the law required, which was to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and the need to promote good relations between persons of different racial groups.

Thanks to this case, it is now difficult to see how any future decision to allow the wholesale destruction of this place could ever survive a court challenge.

My promise to the Ward's Corner Community Coalition is that I will support them in any future battles which they may have just as I have done in the past."

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

    Councillor Karen Alexander

I was born and brought up in Upminster, Essex, where I lived until 1986, the year I met my husband - Mark. We first moved to Hackney, and then in 1996 moved to the Harringay Ladder. From the moment I moved to London I loved it, and having spent over half my life here I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. No where else offers the cultural, racial, social and ethnic diversity of London and this is especially true of Harringay.

David has lived in Tottenham for over twenty years and is now raising a family here. He is a governor of South Harringay Junior School and has long been active in local residents associations.

David's parents were refugees from Hitler who came first to England and who later went to the United States, where he was born. He was educated in an inner-city state school and at Syracuse University and the University of London. After working for the New York City Department of Social Services in the South Bronx, where he acquired the skill of helping people with limited knowledge of English to deal with complex issues, he came to England, and qualified as a barrister in London.

On Monday 12th April, David, along with Councillor Karen Alexander (Harringay Ward) and fellow Council candidate Chris Ford handed in their petition for a safe pedestrian crossing over Green Lanes at Frobisher Road.

In total, 475 signatures were obtained from residents and visitors from all over London. Thanks to this impressive show of support, the need for a safe crossing here will figure prominently in the review of road traffic which the Council is due to start later this year.

David Lammy's belated campaign against more betting shops should not conceal the fact that he could, and should, have intervened much earlier.

Haringey Council has not been able to stop the spread of these establishments because the Government, through the Gambling Act 2005, severely restricted local authorities' ability to do so.
